Our indoor/outdoor Rail sofa collection has its roots in the Arts and Crafts Movement but updates and elevates it with a sculpted and more severe utilitarian style. We developed the system for a specific environment - a client’s guest house/pool pavilion we designed near our base in New Canaan, formed out of a single long rectangle, with a substantial cantilevered element at one end, and a central covered outdoor room. When opened up, it creates one singular living space, running the entire width of the pavilion. We created Rail to seamlessly integrate these indoor and outdoor living rooms with a singular visual element.

Constructed using precise joinery principals, the new design has a light but muscular frame defined by a single bar as part of the back and arms of the design, enclosing the seating cushion with a visually strong horizontal line. Cushions are hand-upholstered with variable density foam and a fiber “jacket” housed in an easy to remove cover made from new outdoor fabrics we commissioned from a 150 year-old Italian mill.

The collection consists of two-and three-seater lengths and three sizes of coffee tables. Elements can be combined to create myriad landscape configurations including U-shapes and L-shapes or to create a room within a room. Rail is available in a variety of our favorite woods for both indoor and outdoor use.
